eBay Earth: a day of transactions from around the world, on a globe you explore with your fingertips.

The context

On eBay’s San José campus, eBay Earth shows a full day of transactions on a video wall: a globe where coloured lines link each seller to their buyer at the moment of purchase. The goal: help employees and visitors grasp the brand’s global reach, its 147 million buyers and 17 million sellers.

My role

I designed the navigation UX together with the developers: how you zoom, how you spin the globe, how you filter and compare sales, items and sellers, without ever losing the thread.

The pictogram language that tells an item’s condition, new, refurbished, used, was born in my notebook.

The result

A global brand’s codes followed to the letter, and translated into gestures: eBay lives in the interface too, not just on the screen.

eBay Earth: the circular menu, with the eBay logo, “All products”, the number of items sold, “Top listings”, “Top sellers”, the time selector and the category icons all around
The circular menu: categories all around, the hour’s sales in the centre
